GRK9 Of the Month Georgina

We would like to congratulate Jeanie and her owner for an awesome job these past few months. Your dedication and hard work has shown great progress and we can't wait to see where you guys go from here

.

1. How old was Jeanie when you got her?

- Jeanie is approximately 2 years old, and we got her on November 15, 2020.

2. Where did you get her from?

- We got Jeanie through Niagara Dog Rescue, a volunteer-based non-profit registered charity. Jeanie is originally from San Antonio, Texas.

3. Why did you pick her?

- At Niagara Dog Rescue, we were paired with an adoption lead. Our adoption lead had a thorough conversation with us to ask about what kind of dog we were looking for and what kind of a dog would fit our lifestyles. We were looking for a medium energy and medium sized dog that would do well with condo living. As soon as our adoption lead sent us a picture and profile of Jeanie, we knew she was the perfect match for us!

4. Why did you want to begin training?

- Jeanie is our first rescue dog, and we did not have any information regarding her past, so we wanted to ensure that she would be successful as a family dog. In our immediate family, we have 3 small dogs and young children and wanted to ensure that there wouldn’t be any issues between any of them.

5. What were some of your training goals?

- Our training goals largely consisted of obedience training and impulse control. We believe Jeanie was a stray dog so we wanted to ensure that she’s fully trained on the most common commands (sit, stay, drop it, mark, etc.) and due to her likely being a stray, we wanted to work on her impulse control.

6. What was the biggest obstacle to overcome during t

raining?

- The biggest obstacle we’ve had to overcome during her training is loose-leash walking. Jeanie has a tendency to get fixated on things in the distance which causes her to excessively pull on the leash. Under the direction of Holly from Grassroots K9, we were able to improve Jeanie’s walking significantly and learned how to redirect her.

7. What are you guys working on now?

- Currently, we are working on Jeanie’s basic obedience and impulse control. Specifically, we are focusing on loose-leash walking and the “mark” command.

8. If you could give any of our clients advice about accomplishing your training goals, what would it be?

- The advice we have to offer is to be patient, be consistent, and to put in the work! The staff at Grassroots K9 are incredibly knowledgeable and know how to relay that information to their clients. However, it’s up to every owner to make sure that they’re actually implementing those lessons with their dogs.
